What Is the Atlas Vertebra?

Atlas Vertebra is the first cervical vertebra at the top of the neck. It supports the base of the skull and connects with the second cervical vertebra, called the axis. Its shape differs from most vertebrae because it forms a ring and helps the head move through nodding and rotation.

Key Takeaways About Atlas Vertebra

  • The atlas has a ring-like shape without a typical vertebral body.
  • Its joints help coordinate head movement with the upper neck.
  • The atlas is not the same structure as the axis.

How Atlas Vertebra Works

The Atlas Vertebra forms the upper connection between the skull and the neck. Its ring-shaped structure surrounds the upper spinal cord and creates joint surfaces for the base of the skull. These joints support small, coordinated movements that help you nod and turn your head.

The atlas also connects with the Cervical Spine and the axis below it. During a chiropractic adjustment, the practitioner may assess the upper neck through posture, palpation, and movement checks. The goal is to understand how the area moves and responds, not to treat the atlas as an isolated bone. Findings from the surrounding joints and muscles help guide the selected technique.

From the Arrowhead Clinic Chiropractic - Albany team

When we assess the atlas during a Chiropractic Adjustment, we consider head position, upper-neck motion, and the surrounding tissues together. We use those findings to select an appropriate adjustment approach and to track changes in movement during care.

Atlas Vertebra in Practice: A Real-World Example

A person with neck stiffness after extended desk work may receive an upper-neck assessment that includes the atlas region. The chiropractor may check head movement and surrounding muscle tension before selecting a Chiropractic Adjustment technique.
