What Is a Disc Bulge?

A disc bulge is a condition in which the outer part of a spinal disc extends beyond its usual boundary. The disc material may contact nearby tissues or nerves, but a bulge does not always cause symptoms. A disc bulge differs from a herniated disc because the outer disc wall remains largely intact.

How Disc Bulge Works

Disc Bulge describes a change in the shape of a spinal disc. Each disc sits between spinal bones and helps absorb movement. A bulge develops when the disc extends outward around part of its edge, while the outer wall remains largely intact. The change may occur without symptoms.

Assessment considers the location of the bulge and its relationship to nearby structures. A bulge may touch or narrow space around a nerve root, which can help explain pain, tingling, or weakness when those symptoms are present. A herniated disc involves disc material pushing through a damaged area of the outer wall. Treatment planning also considers movement, strength, sensation, and the person’s reported symptoms.

From the Arrowhead Clinic Chiropractic - Albany team

When we assess a disc bulge, we review the person’s history and examine movement, strength, sensation, and related spinal function. We use those findings to understand whether the reported symptoms fit the disc location and to guide care within Herniated Disc Treatment.

Disc Bulge in Practice: A Real-World Example

A person with a lumbar disc bulge may report lower back discomfort that changes with sitting, bending, or walking. The care team considers those symptoms alongside movement findings and any available clinical records.
